About Bath Bridge School

Phil Cooke started Bath Bridge School in the belief that there there ought to be opportunities to play and learn about bridge in Central Bath. The aim was to create an atmosphere that was welcoming and friendly.

Phil cooke is an experienced scientist, lecturer, and author. During this period he acquired considerable experience in teaching undergraduates, arranging conferences and seminars, and giving courses to mature professionals. Since retiring to Bath he has returned to playing bridge and become a wine educator, and is an EBU qualified bridge teacher.

Teaching

In any bridge class there is always a range of skills, aptitudes, and intellectual curiosity. Then there is the well known fact that people learn in different ways, and at different speeds. That is why we believe in small group teaching. It then becomes possible to give a level of personal attention that is not possible with a big group.

Visual aids are also a feature of our courses. Carefully designed slides mean that any difficult concepts are explained visually, as well as verbally. And there are hands to play and discuss that also illustrate and reinforce the ides that have been presented.

To provide for those already playing at club level Masterclasses are given by Robert Baker. Robert is a full time bridge and chess teacher and a formidable bridge player.

Both Robert Baker and Phil Cooke have many years of experience in teaching challenging subjects in an easy to understand and informal way.

Suitable?

Our bridge courses and play and learn sessions are mainly aimed at anyone who can already play bridge and wants to improve. The backgrounds of those attending include:

  • Those playing with friends and wanting to improve their bridge
  • Those playing social bridge, and wanting to move onto club play
  • Those returning to bridge after a gap
  • Those wanting to adapt to the Acol system
  • Those new to the area and wanting to meet other bridge players

The venues are in central Bath, near to the Assembly Rooms and Park & Ride bus stops. Some of those attending previous courses and the social bridge on a Monday live within walking distance, but many come from the surrounding area, including, Frome, Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge, Keynsham, Bathford, Corsham, Norton St Philips, Freshford, Beckington, Coombe Hay, and as far afield as Sherborne.
